The British Business and General Aviation Association (BBGA) stands as a vibrant cornerstone of the UK’s aviation industry, championing the diverse and dynamic world of business and general aviation. With a rich history, a bold vision for the future, and an unwavering commitment to its members, BBGA is a driving force behind the sector’s growth, sustainability, and global influence. From its humble beginnings to its pivotal role on the world stage, BBGA’s story is one of passion, collaboration, and innovation. Let’s take a closer look at this remarkable organization and its journey to elevate UK aviation to new heights!

A Storied Beginning and Remarkable Evolution

Founded in 1974, the BBGA emerged to represent the burgeoning business and general aviation sector in the UK, a niche yet vital part of the aviation ecosystem. Initially a small collective of operators, fixed-base operators (FBOs), and support organizations, the association aimed to give a unified voice to an industry often overshadowed by commercial airlines. Over the decades, BBGA has grown into Europe’s largest national business aviation association, now boasting nearly 200 member companies, ranging from operators and legal firms to training providers and technology innovators.

The association’s development has been marked by strategic leadership and adaptability. A pivotal moment came in 2011 when Marc Bailey, a seasoned aviation professional with a 40-year career spanning British Airways and Cobham Aviation Services, was appointed CEO. Bailey’s vision has steered BBGA through challenges like the global financial crisis, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the association remains a robust advocate for its members. In 2021, Lindsey Oliver, who joined BBGA in 2009, became Managing Director, bringing her expertise from trade associations and her deep commitment to the industry. Together, Bailey and Oliver have transformed BBGA into a proactive, member-focused organization.

“BBGA has evolved into a powerful platform that not only represents our members but also shapes the future of aviation in the UK and beyond,†says Marc Bailey, CEO of BBGA. “Our growth reflects the resilience and innovation of the business aviation sector, and we’re excited to lead the charge toward a sustainable, thriving industry.â€

Mission and Aims: Championing a Sustainable Future

BBGA’s mission is clear: to support and promote a sustainable, profitable general aviation industry that contributes significantly to the UK economy, valued at over £2 billion annually. The association strives to represent the full spectrum of business aviation activities, from corporate jet operations to medical evacuations, search and rescue missions, and connecting remote regions. It aims to foster innovation, advocate for fair legislation, and enhance the industry’s public perception, often misunderstood as solely serving luxury travel.

Sustainability is at the heart of BBGA’s agenda. The association actively supports initiatives like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), electric aircraft operations, and infrastructure development for cleaner technologies. It also addresses pressing issues like illegal chartering and workforce development, ensuring the industry remains safe, compliant, and attractive to new talent.

“We’re not just about jets; we’re about connecting communities, saving lives, and driving economic growth,†says Lindsey Oliver, Managing Director of BBGA. “Our aim is to ensure business aviation is recognized for its value and supported by policies that allow it to flourish responsibly.â€

Supporting the Industry: A Voice and a Vision

BBGA is a tireless advocate for its members, engaging with regulators like the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the Department for Transport (DfT), and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Through workgroups focused on flight operations, sustainability, airworthiness, FBO’s and more, BBGA channels member feedback into actionable policy recommendations. The association’s influence extends to addressing critical issues like Brexit’s impact on traffic rights and the need for a strategic airfield network to protect small airports from redevelopment.

BBGA also champions workforce development through initiatives like the Aviation Skills Recruitment Platform and Trailblazer Apprenticeships, addressing the industry’s talent shortage. By collaborating with government and educational institutions, BBGA is paving the way for the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals.

Global Partnerships: Amplifying Influence

BBGA’s partnerships with international organizations like the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) and the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) are central to its global presence.

The association’s role in the European Council of General Aviation Support (ECOGAS), where Marc Bailey serves as President, provides a direct line to EASA, influencing airworthiness and training regulations. With ECOGAS representing over 700 members across Europe, BBGA ensures UK interests are heard in Brussels. IBAC, based in Montreal alongside the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), connects BBGA to global standards like the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) and Ground Handling (IS-BAH) reinforcing safety and professionalism worldwide.

These partnerships are vital for harmonising regulations, combating illegal chartering, and promoting sustainability. For instance, BBGA’s involvement in the Air Charter Safety Alliance, alongside EBAA, IBAC, and others, underscores its commitment to global safety standards. “Our international partnerships amplify our voice and ensure UK aviation remains a global leader,†Bailey notes. “Together, we’re shaping a future where business aviation is safe, sustainable, and accessible.â€

Member Benefits: Empowering Success

Joining BBGA offers unparalleled benefits for its nearly 200 members. From advocacy and regulatory support to networking and business opportunities, BBGA empowers companies to thrive. Members gain access to exclusive events, real-time industry updates, and representation at local, national, and international levels.

Networking is a cornerstone of BBGA membership. Events like the annual conference and Christmas networking session foster valuable connections. New member Warren Lovell of Leviate Air praises BBGA’s networking events, saying, “We’ve already formed great new business partnerships through BBGA’s events, which have been instrumental in our growth.†Members also benefit from BBGA’s proactive support, even for non-members, as evidenced by a small family-owned business that received assistance during a regulatory challenge.

“BBGA’s ability to bring together all sectors of UK aviation gives us enviable networking access,†says Oliver. “Our members are at the heart of everything we do, and we’re committed to helping them succeed.â€
